Foldable tablets and dual screen OLED notebooks are set to be hot next year. Now LG Display wants to jump into the hybrid tablet-notebook market, resulting in the OLED panel maker accelerating its production of foldable OLED displays, according to sources. The move will see them go head to head with Samsung and BOE in China. 

The new LG OLED displays will be more durable, and include high-luminance technology. 

Foldable tablets are tipped to be the next big thing in the mobile space, with the original concept born out of the ‘Horseshoe Bend Project’ between Samsung, Intel, and Microsoft in 2020. In 2021, an Apple patent confirmed one of their foldable device intentions would be a foldable “laptop.”

In August, it was confirmed by Samsung that they’re developing a foldable hybrid tablet-notebook. HP also introduced its first gen hybrid tablet-notebook, named the “HP Spectre Fold.” This trend is expected to gain momentum during CES in 2024.  

LG recently revealed it started mass production of OLED panels for 17 inch foldable laptops. Lenovo has already released their version of a dual OLED notebook.

Unveiled during CES 2023 this past January, they are expected to use the Tandem OLED adding an extra organic emitting layer, providing a brighter screen. 

It also disperses energy across components for better stability and a longer lifespan. 

LG Display have reduced the curvature of the folding part to 3R, or the bending degree of a 3mm circle radius. This can create a slim design minimising creases, providing a very high resolution and contrast ratio. 

When the screen is fully extended, the product will be able to be used as a 17 inch laptop, complete with a 4:3 aspect ratio, and when folded in half, it can be used as a 12.3 inch monitor, complete with a 3:2 aspect ratio. 

It appears Apple won’t participate in the first round of next-gen hybrid tablet-notebook devices, however, have been filing patents for such devices should they prove popular.
