Lenovo is preparing to launch a new compact Legion gaming tablet, with 5G connectivity shaping as the headline upgrade for mobile gamers.

The device, currently being teased in China as the Legion Y700 Infinite, is set to be officially launched in August.

Lenovo has started showing off the tablet in teaser videos, giving an early look at its redesigned rear camera module and RGB lighting around the camera island.

The new model follows the Legion Y700 Gen 5, which launched in China earlier this year before arriving in global markets as the Legion Tab Gen 5. That model features an 8.8-inch 3040 x 1904 LCD display with a 165Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, up to 24GB of RAM and a 9,000mAh battery with 68W wired charging.

Lenovo has yet to confirm full specifications for the new Y700 Infinite, but 5G support has already been confirmed. That could give the tablet a stronger pitch to gamers who want to play online away from Wi-Fi, particularly for cloud gaming, multiplayer titles and game streaming.

Reports out of China also suggest the new model could switch from LCD to OLED, which would give it deeper blacks, better contrast and richer colours than the existing Legion Tab Gen 5. That would also put it closer to rival compact gaming tablets and premium small-screen devices such as the iPad mini.

The teaser footage shows a gaming-focused design, including RGB strips surrounding the rear camera area. The display also appears to retain fairly noticeable bezels, despite Lenovo promoting a compact form factor.

It remains unclear whether the Legion Y700 Infinite will be released outside China, or whether it will come to Australia. Local pricing and availability have not been announced.

Lenovo is expected to reveal more details ahead of the tablet’s official August launch.
