Ikea has updated its Varmblixt lamp with smart lighting features, turning a design-focused piece into a connected home accessory. The rounded glass light now supports colour changes, dimming and app-based control, while still functioning as a simple lamp straight out of the box.

With a price of about A$150, it sits in the mid-range for decorative lighting. Brightness is modest at 180 lumens, making it better suited to ambient use rather than focused tasks. In smaller rooms, however, it provides enough illumination for general use.

Control is handled through a built-in button or an included remote, which allows users to switch the lamp on or off, adjust brightness and cycle through a set of pre-set colours. The bulb is replaceable and rated for long-term use, which adds to its practicality.

When connected to Ikea’s Dirigera hub, priced at around A$165, or a compatible Matter system, additional features become available. These include scheduling, expanded colour options and adaptive lighting that shifts tone throughout the day.

The design can be mounted on a wall or placed on a surface, though its size may take up space on smaller tables. While it stands out when illuminated, its appearance is more understated when switched off.
