Garmin Software Update Adds Fall Detection, Voice Controls, New Training Tools
Garmin is rolling out a major software update for a selection of its smartwatches, adding features like fall detection, hands-free voice controls and new running features.
The update was announced on 22 September and covers selected models across Garmin’s fēnix, Forerunner, Venu and vívoactive ranges, as well as compatible Edge cycling computers. The free software features are rolling out now.
One of the most notable additions is fall detection for the Garmin Venu 4. When the watch detects a hard fall, it can send a message with the wearer’s live location to pre-set assistance contacts. Users can configure the feature for continuous monitoring or limit it to selected activities.
While Garmin’s existing safety features include incident detection and assistance tools, the new capability extends this functionality to fall detection. The company does note, however, that its safety features have requirements and limitations, including the need for a compatible smartphone connection in some circumstances.
The update also introduces hands-free voice controls on compatible Garmin watches. With an “Okay, Garmin”, the watch can perform supported tasks such as starting a timer, launching an activity or switching on the watch’s torch.
A separate “phone assistant” command can be used to access the virtual assistant on a paired smartphone, designed so users don’t need to stop during exercise to search or navigate menus.

For runners, Garmin is adding quick workout suggestions that can be generated by entering a preferred duration and intensity and tailored to the user’s fitness level.
Users can also expect new Garmin Run Coach plans, which are also being introduced. These include run/walk workouts and lower-volume training options. The plans can be used for event preparation, achieving a fitness milestone or general training, and are designed to adapt from day to day based on individual health and recovery metrics.
Other additions include an Indoor XC Ski activity profile, with support for compatible indoor ski trainers.
Garmin is also updating its Edge cycling computer platform. The Enduro ride profile can now automatically recognise when a rider moves between climbing and descending sections, switching modes without requiring manual intervention.
This latest release continues Garmin’s approach of extending the life of its wearables through software rather than reserving new capabilities exclusively for new hardware.
However, features will vary model to model and owners need to check which additions are supported by their particular device, as availability will vary between models and regions. Garmin says compatible watches and cycling computers can be updated through automatic updates and using Garmin Connect or via Garmin Express. Compatible devices will receive the software as the rollout progresses.
