Harman to Invest In Automotive and Premium Audio After Buying Former Sound United Assets
Harman International, the Samsung owned automotive electronics and premium audio company, is sharpening its focus on core growth areas as it prepares to take over the former Sound United business from Masimo Consumer.
The company announced over the weekend that it will sell its Digital Transformation Solutions (DTS) division to Indian IT giant Wipro for $375 million. The deal, which includes 18 global offices across the US, Europe, and Asia, along with around 5,600 employees, is expected to close later this year, the deal delivers the capital the business agreed to pay for the Masimo Consumer business.
Harman said the move will allow it to exit non-core operations and redirect resources into strengthening its position in automotive electronics and premium audio, while also pursuing new growth opportunities in the audio market.
This divestiture follows a string of acquisitions designed to build out Harman’s ecosystem.
In May 2025, the company struck a $350 million deal to acquire Masimo’s consumer audio division, Sound United, which owns the Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Marantz, and Polk brands.
The portfolio adds to Harman’s existing stable, which already includes JBL and automotive rights to the Bang & Olufsen brand.
Analysts note that these assets could also strengthen Harman’s offering to electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers.
Last year, Harman also acquired Roon, a music management and streaming platform, to expand its software and services business.
Samsung bought Harman in 2017 for $8 billion, marking Korea’s largest overseas acquisition at the time. Despite early doubts — Harman reported just 60 billion won ($42.9 million) in operating profit in its first year under Samsung — the company has since become a key profit driver, generating 1.3 trillion won in operating income last year.
With the sale to Wipro and the integration of Sound United’s brands, Harman is signaling a bold commitment to scale up its dominance in the automotive and high-end audio markets.
