Google is expanding one of the biggest updates to Google Maps on Android Auto. Although the rollout is gradual and remains server-side, more users are now gaining access to two of the much anticipated features, Immersive Navigation and a built-in live speedometer.

For months there has been reports of just limited availability of the enhanced maps features however it is now being reported that a broader group of users now have access, including those running stable versions of Google Maps rather than beta builds. 

Immersive Navigation gives drivers a more immersive and detailed experience via 3D map graphics that improve lane guidance, create a clearer route visualisation and make for easier navigation overall while driving. 

The long-awaited live speedometer displays the vehicle’s current speed alongside the posted speed limit directly within Google Maps. This addition brings Android Auto into line with features already available in Apple CarPlay and the mobile version of Google Maps.

The speed display is only visible during active navigation and uses GPS data rather than a vehicle’s onboard speed sensor. It also adapts its appearance to local road-sign standards in different countries.

Google appears to be rolling out the features via server-side activation, meaning users with the same Android Auto and Google Maps versions may receive the update at different times.

The update comes as part of Google’s broader strategy to enhance in-car experiences. In line with this, it is expected that increased integration of Gemini AI and more intelligent navigation capabilities across Android Auto and Google Maps are to come.
