Google is widening the reach of its in-call scam protection for Android in an effort to safeguard users during sensitive conversations linked to banking or payment apps.

The feature activates whenever an Android device recognises that a call is taking place with a number that is not stored in the user’s contacts and a supported financial app is opened at the same time. When this occurs, the system displays a clear alert that allows the user to end the call or stop screen sharing with a single tap. The protection works on devices running Android 11 or later.

The in-call safeguard is designed to prevent fraud attempts that rely on callers pretending to represent banks or financial institutions. Users are shown a warning screen with immediate options to cut the call or halt the screen share. If no action is taken straight away, the system imposes a 30-second pause before allowing the user to continue. This enforced delay is intended to break the sense of urgency that scammers often rely on and gives users time to reassess the situation.

Scam callers frequently pose as authorised bank staff and attempt to pressure victims into sharing access or transferring funds. Google’s expanded protection aims to disrupt these tactics by flagging the risk the moment a suspicious call coincides with financial activity on the device. According to Google, Android users already experience fewer successful scam attempts than iPhone users, highlighting the importance of such safety tools.

The in-call scam feature first appeared in the United Kingdom earlier this year as part of a pilot programme, and Google says it has already helped thousands of people avoid potentially damaging interactions. The company has also introduced additional anti-scam measures to its messaging app to counter phishing attempts and unwanted spam messages.

The protection is now being rolled out in the United States, beginning with widely used fintech services and major banks including Cash App and JPMorgan Chase.
