Google Add Option To Remove Personal Data

Google have continued to ramp up personal security and user safety, with their latest update giving users the option to remove personal data from their search results. The update comes as a change to the search engine’s privacy policy, allowing users to request that certain PII (personally identifiable information) such as phone numbers and email addresses, be removed.

Prior to the update, users were able to request the removal of ID numbers, banking information, signature photos and medical records. The new change expands what can be flagged and removed from search results.

Google have been updating their security measures of late, previously adding the Safety Section to their Play Store, which allows users to see how apps use their data. In a similar way, allowing users to remove personal data from search results prevents their data being used maliciously for identity theft, financial fraud and more.

To request removal, users will need to head to the Google support page and submit URLs. Users are able to log up to 1,000 websites per person. Once requested, Google will undergo a thorough investigation, ensuring that the removal of the URL is valid, according to Global Policy Lead for Search at Google, Michelle Chang. The removal of sites containing public information will not be authorized.
