Google Accelerates Health Initative Following Fitbit Air Launch Problems
Google has accelerated the rollout of its new Google Health app after early buyers of the Fitbit Air encountered problems setting up the newly launched fitness tracker.
Available at JB Hi-Fi for $199, The Fitbit Air, Google’s first new Fitbit device in several years, began arriving on customers’ doorsteps this week. However, some users quickly discovered they could not pair the screenless fitness tracker with their smartphones due to missing software updates.
The issue primarily affected Android users who had not yet received version 5.0 of the Google Health app, which officially replaces the Fitbit app following a gradual rollout over the past week. Users attempting to connect the Fitbit Air were met with an “app update required” error message, effectively preventing setup of the device.
The problem, first highlighted by GSMArena and widely discussed on Reddit, prompted a response from an official Google employee who confirmed the company was fast-tracking the Android rollout.
“We are doing our best today to accelerate the rollout of the updated app on Android via Play to accommodate early deliveries and it should be available shortly,” the representative wrote. “Anyone on iOS should be able to update via the App Store already.”
Google Health 5.0 is largely a rebranding of the Fitbit app, retaining the redesigned Fitbit experience that Google has been publicly testing for several months. While iPhone users appeared to receive the update relatively quickly, Android users experienced a slower rollout, leading to frustration among early Fitbit Air adopters.
Some users reported temporary workarounds, including sideloading the updated Google Health app manually, although Google appears to have significantly expanded availability of the update since the weekend.
The Reddit thread also revealed another upcoming feature. When asked whether Google Health would support syncing collected fitness data with Apple Health and Apple Fitness, the same Google representative confirmed the capability would be arriving soon.
The Fitbit Air marks an important launch for Google as it continues integrating Fitbit further into its broader health ecosystem. However, the early software hiccup highlights the challenges that can emerge when hardware releases depend heavily on staggered app rollouts across multiple platforms.
