Fitbit Adds A Kids Watch To Boost Sales, Unveils New Smartwatch
Fitbit is launching its first ever kids fitness tracker to try and boost sales as the company has been struggling financially.
Only last month its shared plummeted 14 per cent due to low Ionic sales. The company gave a disappointing forecast for the first quarter of 2018, admitting it is facing competitive pressures in the market.
Fitbit says the Ionic was not selling as expected, raising concerns about the company’s ability to become profitable again in the near term. Its new smartwatch, the Fitbit Versa is cheaper than the Ionic with it priced at $299 compared to the $449 price tag of the Ionic.
The Fitbit Versa has new additions including a female health tracker, Fitbit OS 2.0 and a new personalised dashboard.
The Ace, its first ever kids fitness tracker that looks similar to the Alta. This device is aimed for children aimed 8 years and older. It tracks steps, active minutes, sleep and has 5 days of battery life with a showerproof wristband.
It also has a reminder for kids to move and rewards them for moving through celebratory messages and fun, collectable badges, which can be seen in the Fitbit app. It also has challenges where kids can compete against family, or friends, in daily and weekend challenges, or in a Family Faceoff – a new 5-day step challenge that allows members in a family account to compete against each other and stay motivated.
The Versa device comes with the usual bells and whistles such as 24/7 heart rate tracking, onscreen workouts, on device music and a wallet where users can tap and pay with their Fitbit. The Versa battery lasts up to four days, similar to the Ionic.
The company is also debuting its new female health tracking where female users can track their menstrual cycle and view holistic health data. Users can log their cycle data, see their dynamic cycle predictions for the next month based on their data, learn more about their period and connect with other female users. This will be available from May.

The new Fitbit OS 2.0 comes with a personalised dashboard providing a simplified, intuitive and holistic view of health and fitness data. Users are also able to view stats at a glance for both daily and weekly fitness numbers, historical activity, heart rate, exercise summaries, action-oriented motivational messages, tips and tricks, and daily guidance.
Later in 2018, the OS will be more personalised with reminders, celebrations, logging, insights, sleep summaries and social challenges, with prompts to take actions based on your data.
It also has personalised fitness guidance with on-screen personal workouts from Fitbit Coach, vi 15+ Exercise Modes, Connected GPS, swim tracking with water resistance up to 50 meters, plus automatic activity and exercise tracking.
Similar to the Ionic, it has sleep stages and Insights to see how well you’re sleeping and set a restful sleep schedule, and Cardio Fitness Level to see how fit you are; move more throughout the day with Reminders to Move. A relative SpO2 sensor opens the potential to track important health indicators in the future, such as sleep apnea.
The Versa will be available from next month priced from $299 with pre-ordering available.
The Ace will be available in Q2 at $129 also with pre-ordering available.
