In a move that has sent ripples through the consumer electronics accessories market, Australian tech accessory brand Cygnett has been acquired by German family-owned company Wentronics, the parent company of Brisbane-based distributor Cellnet. While the sale price remains undisclosed, the transaction marks one of the most significant shifts in Australia’s accessories landscape in recent years.

Industry speculation about a potential sale has been circulating since IFA 2025, with insiders suggesting that Cygnett’s shareholders were exploring strategic options. Those rumours have now been confirmed, with founders Kim Swann and James Roche selling down 80% of their shares to the Wendt family, owners of Wentronics. The Swann family will retain the remaining 20%, supported through the process by global investment bank Lempriere Wells.

Wentronics: A Quiet Global Powerhouse

Founded in 1992, the Wentronic Group has spent more than three decades building a robust international footprint in electronics manufacturing, sourcing, and distribution. Headquartered in Braunschweig, Germany, the company is known for its strong supply-chain capabilities, extensive relationships with major European retailers, and a portfolio that spans power solutions, connectivity products, and consumer accessories.

The acquisition of Cygnett complements Wentronic’s existing global strategy and its Australian presence through Cellnet, a well-established distributor servicing telcos, CE retailers, and e-commerce channels. Despite the shared ownership, Wentronic CEO Michael Wendt emphasised that “Cygnett and Cellnet will operate totally separate from each other,” retaining distinct back-office systems and commercial strategies.

Cygnett: From Melbourne Startup to Global Brand

Established in 2003 by the Swann family, Cygnett began as a modest operation selling cases for the first-generation iPod. Over the next two decades, the Melbourne-based company grew into a global brand recognised for its power banks, chargers, cables, protective cases, and travel accessories.

Cygnett products are now sold across Australia, the UK, the US, Europe, New Zealand, Singapore, the UAE, and the Philippines, with the company earning a reputation for sleek design, reliability, and fast adoption of emerging charging technologies.

Following the tragic passing of co-founder Tim Swann, his wife Kimberly Swann took a more active leadership role. She will remain closely involved with the company as a board member.

“This partnership is about finding the right fit for Cygnett’s future and international expansion while honouring its legacy,” she said, noting that Wentronic’s family values and business ethos aligned closely with Cygnett’s own. “We believe this partnership positions Cygnett for tremendous international expansion while respecting what we have built over the past 20 years.”

Commitment to Growth and Operational Independence

Wentronic CEO Michael Wendt described the acquisition as an investment in a strong and proven brand.
“Cygnett is a leader in the digital accessories industry,” he said. “We’re investing in a success story, and our plan is to continue it together. Cygnett’s team has built something remarkable, and we’re here to support their continued growth and autonomy.”

Industry observers say one of the biggest advantages of the partnership is Wentronic’s extensive European distribution network, which is expected to open new retail channels for Cygnett and accelerate its expansion across the continent.

Cygnett CEO Jason Carrington reinforced that the company’s day-to-day operations will remain unchanged.

“Operationally, nothing changes—we continue to run Cygnett as we always have, with the added benefit of Wentronic’s resources and global network,” he said. “This positions us to accelerate our global growth while maintaining the innovation and quality our customers expect.”

A Future Built on Shared Values

While Wentronic also owns Cellnet, both companies stress that Cygnett and Cellnet will remain entirely separate entities—each with its own identity, leadership team, and operational structure. Any synergies within the broader Wentronic Group will be focused on growth opportunities rather than integration.

The acquisition underscores Wentronic’s long-term commitment to the digital accessories sector and its confidence in Cygnett’s future potential. ChannelNews understands that no structural or staffing changes are planned for Cygnett’s Melbourne headquarters.
