eBay & Stan Join Forces To Combat Amazon

Netflix Australia’s arch rival, Stan, has joined forces with eBay, offering a free three month subscription to eBay Plus members, in a bid to combat the growth of Amazon.

eBay Plus is a paid subscription service (A$49/year), offering members free shipping and returns, exclusive discounts, double flybuys points and more, taking on the likes of Amazon’s Prime membership.

Existing paid eBay Plus members will gain free three months Stan subscription, plus customers who subscribe before October 31.

By comparison, Amazon Australia offers members free delivery, exclusive discounts and access to its content service ‘Amazon Prime Video’ for A$54 annually.

Whilst eBay and Stan’s partnership is a limited offer, commentators speculate it’s not unlikely the companies will collaborate for longer-term benefit.

It’s the latest in a string of third-party partnerships for eBay Australia, as it seeks to combat the growth of Amazon – e.g. partnering with Australia Post for faster seller delivery and fulfilment (à la Fulfilment by Amazon).

Stan is currently jointly owned by Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media, with both parents moving towards a proposed merger. A vote will go to Fairfax shareholders next month.

Should the merger be green-lit, Stan will be fully owned by the new entity, enhancing cross-promotional opportunities for brand partners.
