EXCLUSIVE: Aldi Apologises For 86GB Tablet Error

It’s the 86 gigabyte question – how can you sell a tablet with an odd sounding 86GB internal memory for $149?
Aldi’s late afternoon Thursday email blast advertised its range of Father’s Day gift ideas, including a $149 3G-enabled 9-inch Android tablet, with fine print mistakenly offering an 86GB model.

It turns out that you can’t sell an 86GB tablet for $149 just yet, but only a more standard sounding 8GB tablet for the money, as Aldi acknowledged at 9.20pm on Thursday evening when it sent an email to its newsletter database with the subject line “Sorry, we made a mistake”.

8GB not 86GB is the real figure…

Perhaps it’ll be normal at $149 in two or three years, but as Aldi’s email explains: “On the newsletter sent out by ALDI earlier today on August 14th 2014, there was an error within the product details for the 9” 3G Tablet 8GB, which is due to go on sale on Wednesday 20th August 2014 at ALDI stores.

“We incorrectly stated that the 9″ 3G Tablet was 86GB. Correct specifications for the 9” 3G Tablet is 8GB.
“ALDI apologises for the error and any inconvenience caused.
“The ALDI Team.”
People clearly noticed, with a twitter search for “Aldi 86GB” unearthing the following tweets:
“purserj @purserj  3h
So aldi mistakenly advertised a tablet with 86GB of storage”
“Foolish Commander @franksting  3h
@purserj don’t they have to honour it?”
“purserj @purserj  2h
@franksting they’ve issued a correction for the newsletter so probably not”
The 9-inch dual-core 8GB Android 4.4 tablet will sells at Aldi from the 20th of August, with the usual “limited supply” caveats it always has with its advertised special products.
The tablet looks like it has latest hardware upgrade to the typical low cost yet good value device that Aldi and its various brands like Onix, Bauhn and others deliver.
It’s without the $500+ price tag of the latest iPads, Samsung Galaxy S tabs or LG’s newest sub-$500 G Pad models, but won’t have those tablets’ top-end performance, ultra slim dimensions or advanced design either. The Onix will do the job more slowly and less stylishly but at a price that virtually anyone can afford for a 3G-enabled 9-inch Android tablet.
The 9-inch screen has a 1024×600 resolution, with a 1.2GHz dual core CPU, Android Kitkat 4.4 (with specifying whether its 4.4.2, .3 or 4.4.4), 1GB DDR RAM, 8GB Internal storage and not 86GB, 3G SIM slot for mobile connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11b.g.n, microSD card slot, 2 megapixel rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front camera, GPS and Bluetooth.
Aldi is conveniently also selling a $29.99 Sandisk 32GB Class 10 microSD card for use in tablets and smartphones, on sale in limited quantities from the same 20th of August date.
