Did Samsung’s High-End VR Headset Just Get A Name?

If trademarks filed by Samsung in South Korea are to be believed, the company’s next push into VR will be called Odyssey.

According to SamMobile, “Samsung has filed for the registration of the brand name Odyssey in South Korea as well as for two logos including one which has “VR” in stylized letters. Descriptions provided in the trademark applications mention “virtual reality game headsets” and “virtual reality game software.”

Some have connected this filing to the standalone VR headset Samsung confirmed was in development several months back.

The company already has a strong foothold in the emerging market with their Gear VR, which uses a smartphone slotted into the headset.

However, Odyssey is expected to provide a more high-end experience. It’s expected to feature positional tracking tech and complete directly with gaming-focused virtual reality devices like the HTC Vive and Facebook’s Oculus.

It’s unknown at this time how far along the project is – but if it’s coming sooner rather than later, we may well see it at Samsung’s upcoming event in New York.
