Costco Tops Discount Department Store Customer Satisfaction

Latest numbers from Roy Morgan rank Costco Australia’s leading discount department store in terms of customer satisfaction, narrowly beating rivals Target and Kmart.

The firm’s results claim 87.5% of Australians are satisfied with their discount department store experience – a lift of 1.1% over the year.

For the month of July, Costco achieved a customer satisfaction of 88.6%, with Target notching 88.5% and Kmart 88.4%.

The news comes as Costco eyes further Australian expansion, with a new distribution centre set to open in Sydney’s west next year, alongside an expanded retail presence.

Roy Morgan CEO, Michele Levine, claims the results reflect local discount department stores are taking threat of Amazon Amazon “seriously.”

For the month of July, the biggest improvement came from Best & Less, whose customer satisfaction jumped 1.8% year-on-year to 86.4%.

The news comes after Kmart snared the top spot in May, followed by Target and Costco.

Competition remains close amongst Australia’s discount department stores, with gains seen across the board.

The only satisfaction declines came from Harris Scarfe and Target Country, who missed out on a top five ranking in July.
