Consumer Electronics Adds $1.27 Billion To Australia’s Online Spending Boom
Consumer electronics emerged as one of the biggest contributors to the growth of Australian online shopping in 2025, adding an estimated A$1.27 billion in expenditure over the year.
New analysis from Marketix Digital, based on Australia Post category data, estimates Australians spent A$9.2 billion online on consumer electronics during 2025, representing annual growth of 16 per cent.
While several smaller retail categories recorded faster percentage growth, electronics generated substantially more new spending because of the size of the existing market.
Marketix Digital reconstructed estimated 2024 expenditure using Australia Post’s 2025 spending and annual growth figures. On this basis, consumer electronics expenditure increased from approximately A$7.93 billion in 2024 to A$9.2 billion in 2025, producing an estimated A$1.27 billion increase.
That made consumer electronics the third-largest source of additional online expenditure among the nine retail categories analysed. Only online marketplaces, which added an estimated A$2.17 billion, and food and liquor, at A$1.96 billion, generated larger increases.
The result highlights the difference between looking at percentage growth and examining the actual dollars entering a category.
Books, stationery and multimedia, for example, recorded the fastest growth at 24.1 per cent, but added approximately A$485 million in expenditure. Consumer electronics grew at a slower 16 per cent, yet generated more than twice as much additional spending.
According to Marketix Digital’s calculations, consumer electronics accounted for about 12.6 per cent of the combined spending increase across the nine categories analysed.

The growth was also heavily concentrated among Australia’s largest online retail categories. Online marketplaces, food and liquor, consumer electronics, fashion and apparel, and home and garden collectively accounted for approximately 76 per cent of the calculated increase in expenditure.
The figures come against a broader expansion of Australian eCommerce. Australians spent A$82.6 billion online in 2025, up 14 per cent from the previous year, with approximately 9.8 million households making an online purchase.
For electronics retailers and suppliers, the figures suggest the scale of the online opportunity is better illustrated by absolute spending growth than percentage increases alone. A 16 per cent rise translated into more than A$1.2 billion in additional consumer electronics expenditure moving through online channels in just one year.
Marketix Digital noted that its category growth figures are estimates derived from Australia Post’s rounded 2025 expenditure and annual growth data rather than officially published 2024 category totals.
