Australians Continue to Cut Streaming Services
Australians continued to cut back on streaming services, slashing 1.2 million more streaming accounts in the past quarter.
Media research firm Kantar is expected to release survey results that show the streaming industry remains buoyant with far more new subscriptions than cancellations. The Sydney Morning Herald reports 1.6 million new subscriptions in the quarter.
Reports from May 2022, August 2022 and February 2023 show cancellations to be a continuing trend, although they are slightly down on the past quarter. In August 2022, ChannelNews reported that streaming services were the first luxury to go as economic conditions worsened. Of 660,000 services cancelled, 37 per cent were done to save money.

The next category was households subscribing to specific content which they had since watched, followed by households who decided to enforce a quota of streaming services and would cancel one when they took up another.
By February 2023, cancellations had blown out to 1.3 million in three months. “6.11 million Australian households subscribe to at least one service, with Netflix commanding 76.8 per cent of the market. Amazon Prime and Disney Plus follow far behind, with 33.4 per cent and 31.2 per cent of households having these services.”
