Vlogging Camera Battle Breaks Out As Chinese Rivals DJI And Insta360 Trade Patent Lawsuits
Chinese camera rivals DJI and Insta360 are heading into a patent battle over a new generation of handheld vlogging cameras, with both companies accusing the other of copying key stabilisation and camera technologies.
DJI fired the first shot, suing Insta360 in the US over the newly launched Luna Ultra, which it claims infringes patents linked to its Osmo Pocket range.
The lawsuits allege Insta360 copied elements of the Osmo Pocket 3 design, including the handheld body, gimbal connection, control layout, scroll wheel, record button and rotating display.
DJI is also alleging infringement of utility patents covering gimbal control and subject tracking technology. The company is seeking a permanent injunction to block sales of the Luna Ultra (below) in the US, as well as damages, profit disgorgement and enhanced damages.

Insta360 has now hit back with countersuits of its own, accusing DJI of infringing five patents covering gimbal stabilisation, directional control, camera smoothing, telemetry overlays and panoramic video stabilisation.
The company claims those technologies are used across several DJI product lines, including the Osmo Pocket series, Ronin and RS gimbals, Osmo Mobile products and Osmo 360.
Insta360 founder JK Liu rejected DJI’s claims, saying the Luna Ultra was the result of years of independent research and development.
Liu said development began in 2020, with earlier products such as the ONE R (below), Link webcams and Flow gimbals helping shape the Luna Ultra.

“At Insta360, we prefer to let our products do the talking. But we are not afraid of a legal battle when challenged,” Liu said.
The timing is significant. The Luna Ultra has launched into the US market at a time when DJI faces restrictions on selling new foreign-made drones and cameras in the country, following its addition to the FCC’s Covered List in December 2025.
That makes the legal fight about more than design similarities. A successful injunction against Insta360 could limit one of DJI’s most direct competitors in the growing handheld vlogging camera market.
Insta360 claims the Luna Ultra saw strong early demand in North America, becoming a top seller in Amazon’s US camcorder category within its first 24 hours.
