A new global survey has found that Australians are “well behind a lot of countries around the globe” when it comes to familiarising themselves with the metaverse.

According to the findings from Ipsos, only 44 per cent of Aussies are familiar with the metaverse, while just 36 per cent wish it to become a part of their daily lives.

This compares to 80 per cent of Australians who are familiar with virtual reality, and 51 per cent aware of augmented reality.

As displayed in the above map, the Chinese are the most excited about the burgeoning metaverse, followed by India, and, somewhat surprisingly, Peru.

Australian familiarity rises with education levels, and decreases with age.

Males are slightly more versed in the metaverse.

“The findings from this latest global survey show that Australia is well behind a lot of countries around the globe in terms of our familiarity with extended reality and our feelings towards it,” explains Ipsos Australia director, David Elliott.

“What we know from other research is that as familiarity improves so too does the potential for trust and positivity.

“As we hear more about these technologies and learn more about them, it is likely we will become more positive about them and their potential to hopefully have a real impact on our lives.”
