After introducing the ROG Kithara open-back planar gaming headset earlier this year, the company is now turning its attention to a more portable solution with the release of the ROG Cetra Open Wireless gaming earbuds.

The new earbuds are designed to provide immersive sound while allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings. Instead of sealing the ear canal, the design sits outside the ear using lightweight ear hooks, enabling listeners to hear both their audio and the environment around them. ASUS says the approach is intended to appeal to gamers, music listeners and active users who want high quality sound without losing situational awareness.

The Cetra Open Wireless uses 14.2 mm drivers with a diamond-like carbon coating designed to improve clarity and reduce distortion. The large driver size aims to deliver balanced sound with clear mid tones, detailed high frequencies and strong bass response for both games and music.

Connectivity is handled through a dual mode wireless system. The earbuds support standard Bluetooth for everyday listening, while ASUS’ ROG SpeedNova 2.4 GHz wireless technology provides lower latency for gaming sessions. Users can switch between the two modes depending on whether they are playing on a PC, console or mobile device.

A USB-C wireless dongle is included with the earbuds, enabling the low latency connection while also supporting pass-through charging. This allows users to power their device during gaming or streaming without interrupting the wireless connection.

Durability is another focus of the design. The earbuds carry an IPX5 splash resistance rating, meaning they can handle sweat and light rain during outdoor activities. The ergonomic ear hooks are made from liquid silicone to improve comfort during extended use, and a detachable reflective neck strap is included to provide additional stability while exercising.

Battery performance varies depending on how the earbuds are used. With Bluetooth mode active and additional features such as RGB lighting disabled, the Cetra Open Wireless can deliver up to 16 hours of playback. A short 15 minute charge can provide roughly three hours of listening time.

Voice communication is supported through four integrated microphones arranged in an omnidirectional pattern. These microphones work alongside an AI noise cancellation system that aims to improve voice clarity during online gaming, calls or streaming.

The product enters a competitive market where several brands are experimenting with open ear audio designs. Devices such as Cleer Audio’s Arc 3 Gaming Edition and Shokz OpenFit also target users who want awareness of their surroundings while listening, while clip style alternatives like Sony’s LinkBuds Clip and TCL’s Crystal Clip focus on comfort during long listening sessions.

ASUS appears to be positioning the Cetra Open Wireless for users who move between multiple devices and environments. Mobile gamers, PC players seeking a lightweight alternative to traditional headsets and active users who prefer open ear audio are likely to be the primary audience.
