Apple Unveils Powerful New iMac Pro
Apple’s all-in-one iMac has gone Pro with powerful new processors and graphics designed to meet the needs of professional users.
Described by Apple as “the most powerful Mac ever made”, the new iMac Pro features up to 18-core Xeon processors and up to 16GB of on-package high-bandwidth memory with a Radeon Pro Vega GPU.
The company said the high performance iMac Pro is capable of “advanced graphics editing, virtual reality content creation and real-time 3D rendering”
“This will be our fastest and most powerful Mac ever, which brings workstation-class computing to iMac for the first time,” said John Ternus, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering.
“We reengineered the whole system and designed an entirely new thermal architecture to pack extraordinary performance into the elegant, quiet iMac enclosure our customers love — iMac Pro is a huge step forward and there’s never been anything like it,” Ternus said.
Thanks to an all-new thermal design, as well as an all-flash architecture, the iMac Pro can deliver up to 80% more cooling capacity in the familiar iMac form factor.
The iMac Pro has also been given a new ‘space gray’ paint job, making it distinct from the traditional silver of the iMac.
Configurations for the iMac Pro include up to 4TB of SSD and up to 128GB of ECC memory. Other features include a 27-inch 5K display, four Thunderbolt 3 ports and 10GB Ethernet.
Apple said the iMac Pro is scheduled to begin shipping in December, with prices starting at US$4,999 ($6,675).
