Apple To Upgrade Lock Screen With iOS 16

According to a report from Bloomberg’s resident Apple analyst Mark Gurman, the next generation of Apple’s mobile OS, iOS 16, is set to implement a number of rather substantial upgrades.

The Cupertino based tech companies upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is set for the first week of June and will feature a roadmap of the future of software at Apple, most notably of which, is iOS 16.

According to Gurman, alongside a number of upgrades to messages and health, notification updates and improved iPad multitasking, Apple are looking to improve the functionality of the lock screen with wallpapers with widget functionality, and an always on display. Gurman believes that the always on display will be exclusive to the Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone 14.

The always on display was originally planned for the iPhone 13, but wasn’t implemented in the end. The new feature would allow the device to run a lower frame rate on the lock screen and readily display notification information in a similar way to the Apple Watch.

According to Gurman’s speculation, message upgrades will come in the form of “social network-like functionality, particularly around audio messages”, while the health app is likely to get upgrades that improve interaction between the company’s iPhones and Apple Watches.

Gurman has also expressed that hardware is unlikely to be a big feature of WWDC, due to the stock shortages that are plaguing Apple and other tech companies.
