Apple Releases ‘Most Powerful Mac’ For Over $7K

Apple’s “most powerful Mac ever”, the iMac Pro, has officially landed in Australia, and at A$7299 the device claims to be the “fastest” Mac ever made, whilst being specifically designed for “pro users”.

The Californian tech giant states that the new iMac Pro delivers “incredible computing power” for several high-intensity tasks including; real-time 3D rendering, immersive VR, intensive developer workflows, high megapixel photography, and real-time 4K and 8K video editing.

The new iMac Pro incorporates Xeon processors (up to 18 cores), up to 22 Teraflops of graphics performance and a 27-inch Retina 5K display. In addition, the device will boast Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz, and up to 42MB of cache.

John Ternus, Apple VP of Hardware Engineering, affirms that the iMac Pro combines the traditional iMac design, with workstation-class performance:

“iMac Pro combines the incredible design of the iMac with the most powerful workstation architecture we’ve ever built”

“iMac is the most popular desktop for our pro users due to its amazing display and elegant design, so we completely re-engineered it to deliver performance far beyond what anyone thought possible in an all-in-one”.

Apple states that the iMac Pro “is the first all-in-one built from the ground up”, and boasts new thermal architecture to provide 80% more cooling capacity, whilst retaining quiet sound.

The new iMac Pro will come in a new space grey finish with a matching Magic Keyboard™, Magic Mouse® and optional Magic Trackpad®.

The new device boasts a thin 5mm edge, and comes with a new 1080p FaceTime® HD camera, with new speakers which claim to be 50% louder.

The iMac Pro will feature a “next generation computer core” and up to 16GB of on-package high-bandwidth memory (HBM2).

Boasting a notable 22 Teraflops of performance, Apple claims the new iMac Pro is ideal for machine learning.

The new iMac Pro will also support up to 4TB of SSD, and up to 128GB of ECC memory – and for the first time ever on a Mac, feature 10Gb Ethernet for up to 10 times faster networking.
With Apple’s T2 chip, the iMac Pro also offers “a new level of integration and security”. T2 also includes a “secure enclave coprocessor” which forms the basis for new encrypted storage and secure boot capabilities.
Apple has revealed that in addition to the new iMac Pro, the company is working on a “completely redesigned, next-generation” Mac Pro, designed for pro customers.
