Apple May Adopt Samsung’s Privacy Feature On MacBooks

You’re on a train, and the person beside you is typing on a MacBook. Every word on their screen is perfectly visible to you. This scenario makes you conscious of the need for a privacy filter to protect your work and make it invisible when viewed at angles.

Some laptops have privacy filters that protect your screen contents from prying eyes, but on many, this can come at the expense of clarity. An exception is Samsung that is introducing software driven privacy screen technology on OLED displays.

Using software doesn’t just protect what’s on your screen, it also can offer finer control, letting you choose exactly which apps or windows need heightened privacy.

Tipster Ice Universe has quoted a report that suggests Apple will go the way of Samsung and introduce a privacy display for laptops later this decade, once it adopts OLED displays on MacBooks.

“According to a report released by market research firm Omdia on February 16, Samsung Electronics’ latest privacy display technology, introduced in the Galaxy S26 Ultra, is also expected to be applied to Apple MacBook laptops by 2029,” Ice Universe says in a post on X.

Ice Universe has been delving into the advent of software-controlled privacy displays, noting the difference in what would be available for Samsung’s S26 Ultra compared to the S25 where the privacy display is hardware based.

This is good news for users of MacBooks which I see opened all over the place in public spaces: on park benches, in coffee shops, trains and planes.  It is expected the feature would first come to MacBook Pro models as they are the first expected to use OLED displays.
