Apple wants a quarter of its production to come from India, according to the country’s trade minister, as the tech giant continues to reduce its reliance on China.

India currently accounts for around 5 – 7 per cent of Apple’s production, a figure that is fast rising.

“Apple, another success story,” Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal told a conference yesterday.

“They are already at about 5-7% of their manufacturing in India. If I am not mistaken, they are targeting to go up to 25% of their manufacturing.

“They launched the most recent models from India, manufactured in India.”

Apple started iPhone assembly in Indian in 2017, with Wistron and Foxconn both operating factories in the country. Foxconn sources told Reuters last year the company plans to quadruple its Indian workforce over the next two years.

Last year, analysts at J.P Morgan forecast that a quarter of all Apple products would be made outside China by 2025.
