Amazon Takes On Musks Space X, OZ Key Market

Amazon has launched the first stage of their global satellite communication service, with Australia one of the key markets for the project that could see Australians being able to access up to 400Mb of date via a satellite that was launched into space during the weekend.

ChannelNews was the first Australian media Company to write about this project back in Mach 2023.

Amazon its first two prototype satellites into space on Saturday morning with the Company moving to compete head on with Elon Musk’s SpaceX in building a mega-constellation of broadband internet-providing satellites.

Both Telstra and Optus have signed up to the Musk offering with Telstra also talking to Amazon about their new service for Australia.

The test satellites were launched Florida’s Cape Canaveral space force station.

The satellites called Kuipersat-1 and Kuipersat-2, have been deployed in an orbit 311 miles (500km) above Earth’s surface.

From there, tests will be performed to the spacecraft’s systems, solar arrays will be deployed to generate power, and attempts will be made to beam internet connections from space to a customer terminal on Earth.

Amazon said ” We hit our first major mission milestone at 2:53 p.m. EDT when our mission operations centre in Redmond, Washington, confirmed first contact with KuiperSat-2. This is when the satellite and one of our telemetry, tracking, and control (TT&C) antennas established a telemetry link for the first time. We made first contact with KuiperSat-1 at 2:54 p.m. EDT”.

Management claims that first contact is one of several key steps in their Protoflight mission.

It allows the operation to begin downlinking data on satellite health and establish more regular communications with the satellites.

“The launch today started a new phase of our Protoflight mission, and there’s a long way to go, but it’s an exciting milestone all the same,” said Rajeev Badyal, vice president of technology for Project Kuiper. “I’m tremendously grateful to the Project Kuiper team for their dedication in getting us to this point, and to our partners at United Launch Alliance who helped us deploy our first spacecraft ever into orbit.”
