Amazon Investigated Over Seller Data Misuse
Amazon is facing scrutiny from EU anti-trust regulator,s amid claims it’s misusing “sensitive data” from independent retailers selling on its Markeplace platform.
Anti-trust Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, has pledged to take a “very close look” at Amazon Marketplace’s business practices, including compliance with EU competition rules – noting its role as both a retailer and marketplace.
According to BBC Tech, the European Council is investigating Amazon’s standard contracts with marketplace sellers, with some commentators questioning the long-term affect on other Western Governments (e.g. Australia).
The investigation also analyses how data is used to allocate preferential spots on page listings.
The Commission states Amazon “appears to” use competitively sensitive information on their Marketplace – e.g. about sellers, products and transactions.
An Amazon spokesperson informed BBC Tech it will “co-operate fully” with the European Commission.
