Amazon is bringing same-day delivery to Australia, beginning in Sydney and Melbourne.
Amazon’s director of operations in Australia, Craig Fuller, shared this news at The Australian’s E-Commerce Summit, which has been running all week in Sydney.
Orders taken by 11am will be delivered that same day.
“On any given day, we’ll promise to deliver that early evening to a home,” he said.
The company has offered two-day delivery to Amazon Prime members since launching in 2020.
“Since then, we have put in place more fulfilment centres, which is where our orders are picked and packed, and we have a network of delivery stations around Australia.”
Amazon has six fulfilment centres, as well as 14 delivery stations across Australia for “last mile” delivery. The move to same-day comes after a period of quick growth.
“We had a huge surge in demand as customers couldn’t go outdoors to shop,” Fuller (pictured above) recalled.
“They had to find ways of staying home and getting their products delivered. But we also had the labour impacts. We had to implement new procedures quickly including how we use break rooms, how many people we had on shift and how we used the toilets.
“We were juggling a fine line between meeting customer orders with a restricted ability to do that.”
