Volvo App Will Allow Smartwatch Car Control
The Volvo On Call app will provide functionality, including allowing drivers control of settings such as locking and unlocking and locating their car.
“Volvo On Call is an app that allows you to literally take control over everyday elements in your Volvo,”David Holecek, Volvo Cars director connected products and services, stated of the app.
“You can set heater timings for those cold and frosty mornings or cool down your car in hot weather, check your fuel level and mileage, or time to next service. It even helps you to locate your car in a crowded parking garage.”
Connected cars are set to become increasingly prevalent in the coming years, forming an important component of the internet of things (IoT), with manufacturers decking out their latest models with a range of functionality designed to evolve the IoT ecosystem.
Gartner has forecast that by 2020 there will be 250 million connected vehicles on the road, with the proportion of new vehicles equipped with internet capability to “increase dramatically” over the next five years.
Meanwhile, with Apple recently entering the smartwatch market and with a host of manufacturers this year bringing new Android Wear releases to market, app manufacturers have been focusing on the potential to integrate smartwatches into the IoT ecosystem.
The Volvo update will also see the addition of enhanced “send-to-car” capabilities for navigation purposes, with Volvo stating it is due to be released at the end of June.
