Gear VR Headset Makes Its Bow
The Gear VR is one of the first of a new generation of virtual reality devices that is slated to hit the market in coming months, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Also said to be in the works are: HTC’s Vive, Sony’s Project Morpheus and Oculus’s own Rift. Meanwhile, Google has released Cardboard, a simple box that can turn just about any smartphone into a VR viewer.
Samsung’s device differs from the other systems because it’s powered by a smartphone instead of a PC or a game console. In order to use the Gear VR, users will have to have a Samsung Note 6 or one its line of Galaxy S6 devices.
Gear VR users will be able to tap into Oculus’ VR store, where they will find thousands of hours of streaming videos and hundreds of games according to the company.
