Aussies To Have Access Blocked – But Not All Will Be Caught
The Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Bill, passed by the Senate on Monday night (CDN, yesterday), gives copyright owners the opportunity to seek a court injunction forcing ISPs to block overseas piracy Web sites and to seek damages from the transgressors.
Commentators, however, are dubious about the efficacy of the legislation.
“It might be hard to get people to stop pirating, although the options to get affordable online content are increasing,” Foad Fadaghi managing director of Telsyte, told CDN yesterday.
“The likely outcome in Australia will be similar to that of other countries that have enacted such policies: it will stop some – but not all.”
