Western Digital Introduces New Surveillance Hard Drive Line

Western Digital Introduces New Surveillance Hard Drive LineThe purpose-built line of 3.5″ hard drives, available in 4 and 6 TB models, cater for the greater demands of scalable network video recorder (NVR) surveillance systems, designed for larger-scale systems utilising higher hard drive bay counts and greater numbers of attached cameras.

Western Digital states the new drives’ high capacities “enable long video retention periods for analysis and reference”, designed to withstand the demands of always-on digital NVR environments, offering low power consumption.

The drives feature AllFrame technology, which, when combined with ATA streaming support, helps to reduce video footage loss, equipped with a proprietary cache policy management technology, helping improve data flow and playback.

Matt Rutledge, WD senior vice president of HDD marketing, noted the global market for video surveillance is “expanding with the increased accessibility to easy-to-use systems for small businesses and municipalities”.

“WD optimised the WD Purple NV line of hard drives for NVR digital surveillance systems to improve high-definition video playback for high-camera-count applications,” Rutledge stated.

“NVR surveillance systems can produce incredible amounts of data, which makes the WD Purple NV hard drives a perfect solution for NVR systems needing high-quality recording and playback and high-capacity storage.”

The 6 TB models are shipping immediately to customers for qualification, while the 4 TB models will be available for qualification later this quarter, with both models to be shipping in volume within the quarter.
