| According to sources in Korean the two biggest TV Companies in the world Samsung and LG are set to drop 3D TV technology from their boxes. Effective immediately both Samsung and LG two Companies who went head to head in a fierce 3D TV battle are cutting costs by eliminating 3D TV chip technology in favour of new Ultra High Definition TV and Virtual Reality technology.
“Even though we have been supplying 3D glasses there has been no request for new supply this year.” said a 3D glasses supplier.
“The TV manufacturers are dropping 3D” they added.
“Because Samsung Electronics uses SG (Shutter Glass) method, its TVs need glasses for 3D function but no orders are coming through” they said.
LG Electronics has confirmed that they are planning to significantly reduce number of TVs with 3D function with only top end premium models housing a 3D chipset.
40% of all TVs last year had 3D functions, only 20% of TVs this year will have 3D function.” said a representative for LG Electronics.
“Because there are still consumers who enjoy 3D movies and others, we are going to apply 3D function mainly on premium products.”
“3D TV was a fail due to contents, price, and technologies.” said market research company IHS.
“The fact that people have to wear glasses to watch 3D TVs did not work too well for consumers.” |
