Samsung Reportedly Set To Bring Mobile Payments To Upcoming Smartwatch
With the wearables market enjoying strong growth thus far in 2015 amid the ever-expanding Internet of Things ecosystem, manufacturers are bringing an increasing range of functionality to wearable devices, with the growing mobile payments market a particular focus.
With Apple having launched its Apple Pay mobile payments service last year, Google also recently announced it will be entering the market, unveiling Android Pay for smartphone payments, which is set to be launched later in the year.
Samsung unveiled Samsung Pay, which will work with its flagship Galaxy S6 smartphone line, earlier in the year, at the time flagging a mid-year launch, however it now appears launch of the service has been pushed back a few months, with Bloomberg last week reporting that Samsung has delayed the launch of Samsung Pay until September.
Apple’s Apple Pay service is a feature of its recently released Apple Watch, and it appears Samsung also will be bringing its mobile payments service to an upcoming smartwatch.
South Korea’s Electronic Times newspaper cited unnamed sources in a report that Samsung plans to offer a mobile payments function in a smartwatch to be launched in the second half of the year, Reuters has reported, with the smartwatch to employ NFC technology.
Samsung’s next-gen Gear smartwatch, which will feature a circular watch face, is expected to be launched at IFA 2015.
