BlackBerry Suing Snap Over Messaging Patents

BlackBerry is suing another company over infringing its messaging patents this time it has its sights set on social media giant Snapchat.

According to Bloomberg BlackBerry is suing Snap over infringements from six patents in 2012 and 2014.

Some of these patents include, map improvements for mobile devices (ie Snapchat’s SnapMap); User interface improvements for mobile devices and modern mobile advertising techniques.

The company is currently in a legal battle with Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp claiming the three social media companies have infringed on its BBM patent and continue to infringe via their social sites.

A representative from BlackBerry spoke to Mashable saying, “BlackBerry has a well-earned reputation for protecting and securing our customers’ data and privacy. For more than a year we have been working to establish a dialogue with Snap as we believe there are far more opportunities for partnership than disagreement. While we continue to hold this door open, we also have a strong claim that Snap infringed on our intellectual property, harmed our shareholders, and we have an obligation to pursue appropriate legal remedies.”
