Western Digital Corp. shares fell by 4.5 per cent following the news that hackers have issued the company with a ransom demand.

Western Digital disclosed the security breach earlier this month, but were scant on details. Now, the hacker is claiming to have stolen around 10 terabytes of data, and is demanding “at least eight figures” not to publish the information on the dark web.

“This investigation is in its early stages and Western Digital is coordinating with law enforcement authorities,” Western Digital said in a statement issued with the disclosure, on April 3.

The hack occurred on March 26, according to Western Digital. The company is yet to respond to the demand.
