The Australian Communications and Media Authority and the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further promote cooperation between the two agencies. ‘In a rapidly changing communications industry it is important for agencies such as ACMA and the TIO to be cooperating closely to resolve issues of concern to consumers and industry’, said Chris Chapman, ACMA Chairman. The MOU covers matters related to: the exchange of information and advice about telecommunications consumer complaint investigations and the application of legislative and alternative dispute resolution remedies and; the exchange of information about telecommunications and internet industry service and complaint trends; and compliance and enforcement action related to membership of the TIO scheme. ‘This MOU with the TIO is another demonstration of ACMA’s commitment to cooperating with other regulatory and industry bodies,’ Mr Chapman said. ‘For example, ACMA works closely with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to facilitate the flow of information about between the two agencies and there are reciprocal membership arrangements in place.
