“Like Nothing We’ve Ever Experienced”: Retailers Set For PS4 Midnight Launch
All major retailers are holding PS4 midnight launches tonight, anticipating it will be as big as the XBox One launch, last week, which sold 1 million in 24 hours, globally.
But if you haven’t pre-ordered the Sony console you may be out of luck.
EB Games is promising pre-orders delivery of the PlayStation 4 ‘early 2014’, while Dick Smith will have 300 consoles available at the official launch at Sydney Central store tonight – no pre-orders required.
JB Hi-Fi have already sold out of Day 1 shipments and as well as pre-Christmas 2nd shipments so “in that sense PS4 will meet our expectations and match the XBox success,” said JB Hi-Fi Marketing Manager, Scott Browning.
Dick Smith is holding the official PS4 launch at 9:30pm -12:30am at Sydney Central store tonight (ground floor of Westfield Sydney – Pitt Street Mall near the food court), tunes from DJ XCENTRIK and gamers can try out new games on a PS4 demo console. Selected JB Hi-Fi stores will be holding midnight launches, as are EB Games.
Gamers who pre-ordered a Playstation 4 from Dick Smith can score one of the 300 special launch consoles, and get a refund on their pre-order.
Pre-ordered before 17 September can pickup from Friday, 29 November. But for gamers how ordered after 17 September, shipment isn’t due until late December. Ouch.
Gamers are invited to come dressed as their favourite PlayStation character, and will have the chance to win PS4.
EB Games too is holding midnight launches in stores as it did for the massive Xbox One launch last week, which it called ‘the biggest gaming launch in history’.

But, there is also limited stock of games including Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Buccaneer Edition, Call of Duty: Ghosts Limited Edition and Battlefield 4, the gaming store is warning.
“The anticipation for both Playstation 4 and Xbox One is like nothing we have ever experienced,” Debra McGrath, National Brand, Events and Engagement Manager told CN.
When asked who will win the “day one race” – Xbox One or PS4, she said:
“There are still a lot of numbers to be counted and it is just too close to call at this early stage. However we are almost completely certain that both consoles will be sold out across Australia and New Zealand before Christmas.”
