UBS Tips Smooth Transition For JB Hi-Fi After Leadership Shake-Up Brings Market Unease
UBS analysts are tipping that yesterday’s market reaction to JB Hi-Fi’s leadership shake-up will have little impact on the retailer’s short-term performance, despite a sharp share price drop following the announcement.
The comments come as speculation mounts over the future direction of the $10.5 billion consumer electronics giant after CEO Terry Smart confirmed he will retire in October.
JB Hi-Fi’s current chief operating officer and former long-time CFO Nick Wells will step into the role.
On Monday, JB Hi-Fi shares dived 8.4% to $107.83, overshadowing what many described as a strong full-year result.

The sell-off pulled down the ASX consumer discretionary sector, even as hopes of another interest rate cut buoyed other retailers.
UBS analyst Shaun Cousins said the CEO change was expected, though the timing came slightly earlier than anticipated.
Cousins described JB Hi-Fi’s FY25 results as “solid,” with strong momentum in Australia and New Zealand offsetting softer trends at The Good Guys, which posted 6.9% sales growth and an 8.2% rise in gross profit.
Full-year net profit, excluding significant items, came in at $476.1 million – 1% above UBS forecasts – with revenue up 10% to $10.55 billion. Dividends surprised on the upside at 375¢ per share against a market expectation of 333¢.
July trading updates showed same-store sales up 5.1% in Australia and 24% in New Zealand. UBS has maintained its $109 price target.

The result caps a period of record performance for JB Hi-Fi, which has seen its share price hit 11 record highs in the past four months.
Since Smart returned to the top job in 2021, the stock has surged 151% despite earnings growth being far more modest. Analysts say this is a sign of investors paying a premium for consistent execution in a challenging retail market.
Smart’s departure marks the end of an era for the retailer, which has navigated shifts from CDs and DVDs to smartphones, gaming, streaming and smart home devices.
Chairman Stephen Goddard praised Smart’s leadership, noting his role in repositioning The Good Guys and driving JB Hi-Fi’s sustained growth.
Wells, a 16-year veteran of the company, said he was “excited” to lead the group’s three retail brands – JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and E&S – into their next phase, adding that the businesses are in “great shape and are well positioned to maximise the opportunities ahead of them”.
