TCL has introduced an updated version of its affordable Tab A1 Plus tablet, adding its proprietary NXTPAPER display technology and a larger battery while retaining much of the hardware found in the original model.

The refreshed tablet continues to feature a 12.2-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2400 x 1600, a 120Hz refresh rate and brightness of up to 500 nits. The biggest visual change is the inclusion of TCL’s NXTPAPER technology, which is designed to provide a more paper-like viewing experience and reduce eye strain during extended use.

Users can switch between standard colour mode, colour ink mode and greyscale ink mode using a dedicated hardware button, allowing the display to adapt to different tasks such as reading, browsing or watching videos.

Battery capacity has also received a significant upgrade, increasing from 8,000mAh to 10,000mAh. Charging speeds have improved as well, with support for 33W wired charging replacing the previous 20W capability.

TCL has also upgraded the front-facing camera from 5MP to 8MP to improve video calls and selfies, while the rear camera remains an 8MP sensor.

The remainder of the specifications are largely unchanged. The tablet is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, paired with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Storage can also be expanded by up to 2TB using a microSD card.

Additional features include a metal unibody design, IP54-rated dust and splash resistance, stylus compatibility, quad speakers and support for Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.

The new Tab A1 Plus NXTPAPER is priced at approximately A$610, although TCL is offering an introductory promotion that reduces the price to around A$460 for a limited time.

The launch forms part of TCL’s broader strategy to expand its NXTPAPER technology across more affordable devices. The company already offers the budget-friendly Tab 8 NXTPAPER 5G, which remains its lowest-priced tablet featuring the paper-like display technology.
