TCL Brings Android 14, HDMI QMS and AI Upscaling to Google TVs
TCL is preparing a major firmware update for its recent Google TV models, upgrading devices from Android 12 to Android 14 and adding features aimed at smoother performance and better picture quality.
The update is currently available as a manual download and will roll out over the air soon.
The update targets TCL TVs with the MediaTek Pentonic 700 chip, including popular models such as the C8K, QM8K, C7K, C6K, C855, C805 and NXTVISION.
These sets will catch up with TCL’s 2026 models, which come with Android 14 pre-installed.
Key features include HDMI 2.1 Quick Media Switching (QMS), which allows TVs to adjust refresh rates to match connected devices without the usual black-screen interruptions.

This is especially useful when streaming 24Hz movies on devices like Apple TV 4K. QMS works on HDMI 1 and 2 ports and requires a compatible source device.
The firmware also adds ‘Super Resolution’ upscaling, which uses AI to enhance edges and detail in lower-resolution content, making older sources look sharper on 4K screens.
Other Android 14 improvements include energy modes, picture-in-picture support and system optimisations. Early reports suggest a patch to enable IMAX Enhanced DTS:X content with Disney+ may also be included.
TCL has not yet released full notes for v590, but the update highlights the company’s push to keep its Google TVs competitive with Samsung and LG.
