Stan Pay-TV Numbers Hit 930K: Netflix, Foxtel Still Way Ahead

Revenue and subscriber numbers are up at Stan, the subscription video service put together as a joint venture between the Fairfax news group and the Nine Network.

However Stan still appears to be lagging the much more popular US-based Netflix service by a wide margin.

Announcing to Fairfax Media’s results this week, CEO Greg Hywood said that Stan’s subscriber base had reached 930,000 in the six months to December 31. It  had started from a base of zero three years ago.

Stan’s revenue for the six months is said to have surged 83pc, though the actual dollar figure has not been revealed.

The leading operator in this field is Netflix, which is said to have around 3.98 million subscribers in Australia.

Foxtel, jointly owned by Telstra and the Murdoch empire, had a fall in subscriber numbers to around 2.8 million in 2017.
