Sony Blocks Third-Party PS5 Customisation

Sony has been fighting third-party manufacturers selling PlayStation 5 faceplates since the console came out last November, and now they have been awarded a patent for the product, essentially shutting down the entire faceplate industry.

Faceplates are a way for gamers to customise the physical design of their PS5, and have become a lucrative market.

The company was granted the patent from the USPTO last week, a year after it filed the design.

Sony has been threatening legal action against companies that popped up in the interim, such as ‘Change Your Plates’, but the official awarding of the patent now means that Sony can control the market.

Of course, this is least of Sony’s PS5 woes with the ongoing supply chain crisis meaning that they can’t actually ship enough consoles for people to customise.
