Samsung’s Latest LED Packages Optimise Melatonin Levels

Samsung Electronics has unveiled new LED packages that aim to help regulate people’s melatonin levels, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle.

“Our LED solutions are ushering in a whole new human-oriented approach of using artificial lighting to enhance productivity and relaxation, benefitting modern-day indoor lifestyles,” said un Soo Kim, senior vice-president of the LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s ‘human-centric’ LED packages, known as LM302N, utilise light spectra with optimised amounts of cyan to assist your natural body clock.

A higher concentration of cyan suppresses the body’s production of melatonin, increasing your alertness, while a lower cyan light intensity minimises disturbances to the natural onset of melatonin production, which in turn improves sleep quality.

Samsung’s LM302N DAY can suppress the body’s melatonin level 18% more than conventional LED lighting.

LM302N NITE, meanwhile, can provide a proper level of brightness without hindering the production of melatonin, mimicking a person’s hormone level as if they were in a natural atmosphere at night. A person releases around 5% more melatonin under an LEM302N NITE light than a standard LED light.

The DAY and NITE packages could also be combined into a single offering, so you can maintain the optimal cyan light levels for melatonin throughout the day.
