Samsung Trademarks ‘The Window’ TV

Samsung is tipped to release a ‘transparent TV’, following a trademark application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for “The Window”, early this week.

Discovered by Dutch tech website, LetsGoDigitalthe trademark is categorised under ‘TVs’, and is assumed to be a counterpart to Samsung’s The Frame TV.

Samsung’s Frame TV transforms into a framed pieced of art, or displays an image of the adjacent wall to create a camouflaged effect.

Commentators predict The Window could appear at CES 2019, commencing January 8 in Las Vegas.

‘The Window’ will not be world’s first transparent TV – LG has already unveiled 77-inch OLED TVs at previous trade shows, with Panasonic showcasing a transparent TV at IFA 2017.

Samsung has reportedly also unveiled prototype mirrored and transparent TVs/monitors in the past.

‘The Window’ is tipped to follow Samsung’s design initiative, which pledges to remove big black boxes (cast by TVs) in living rooms.

Instead, display screen TVs transform into artwork, or in the case of The Window may ‘disappear’ into their surrounds.

Commentators predict transparent TVs will have strong commercial applications in the future, specifically within public transport and advertising.

Whilst ‘The Window’ trademark is still under examination, there’s no certainty the device will actually be a transparent TV. Further information is tipped to be revealed at CES 2019.
