Samsung Working On ‘Rollable’ Smartphone

Rumours surrounding a possible third device in Samsung’s foldable smartphone range could become a reality, after the Korean tech giant submitted an application to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) indicating the development of a ‘rollable’ smartphone.

Channel News previously reported on the potential of a Samsung rollable smartphone, a project that was initially leaked by tech leaker Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), who said the device would be available in the latter half of 2022.

As with other foldable smartphones, the new rollable device will allow users to change between a small and large screen. The application showcases two designs, one where the screen extends out from the side, and another where it extends out from the top. The extendable panel on both is transparent, with adjustable transparency.

Samsung have listed AR functionality as one reason for this, however it is also likely to make seeing your surroundings while on your phone easier and thus safer.

Rollable devices are still a concept, with companies such as LG and Oppo toying with the idea in the past. While Apple plan on releasing a foldable smartphone by 2025, this will mark the third variant of foldable smartphone in Samsung’s lineup, solidifying their place in the market.
