Samsung is reportedly preparing a return to the premium over-ear headphone market after 11 years with a new product in the works called Galaxy Studio.

The South Korean technology giant is rumoured to be developing the headphones as a rival to Apple’s AirPods Max, according to recent leaks. If the reports are true, the launch would revive a product category Samsung largely abandoned after the release of its Level series of headphones back in 2015 (pictured, top).

The Level On Wireless Pro model was released in August 2015 and is the company’s last premium over-ear headphone product. It features ANC, touch controls, and UHQ audio technology.

The company has a range of earbuds, Galaxy Buds, but there is a clear gap in their personal audio range without a current premium over-ear headphone product.

The reported Galaxy Studio name emerged through a leak from technology tipster Dy, known online as @evowizz. The source previously revealed the Galaxy Buds On name before Samsung officially introduced its open-ear earbuds, which arguably lends some credibility to this latest claim. The upcoming headphones have also reportedly appeared under the internal codename H1.

However, Samsung has yet to confirm the product or its branding.

The potential launch would see Samsung compete more directly in the premium headphone segment, where Apple has a strong presence with its AirPods Max.

Samsung acquired Harman in 2017 so it owns several established audio brands, including AKG, JBL, Harman Kardon and Bowers & Wilkins. This gives it access to extensive acoustic engineering and audio technology.

No verified specifications have emerged and pricing and availability are also unknown, though a 2027 release has been speculated.

If the headphones do make it to market, it has the potential to represent a significant new chapter for Samsung’s audio business.
