Samsung Galaxy owners will soon lose the ability to sync photos and videos directly between the Samsung Gallery app and Microsoft OneDrive.

Microsoft has confirmed the long-running integration will shut down on September 30, ending a backup option that has been built into Galaxy devices for several years.

From October 1, users will no longer be able to connect Samsung Gallery directly to a OneDrive account. Photos previously uploaded to Microsoft’s cloud service will also stop appearing inside the Gallery app.

However, stored images and videos will not be deleted from OneDrive. Users will still be able to access them through Microsoft’s OneDrive app, website or connected Windows PCs.

Galaxy owners can also download original versions of their synced photos to their phone before the change by using the Download Originals option inside Samsung Gallery.

Samsung appears to have already started removing the feature for some customers. Galaxy devices that have never previously enabled Gallery syncing are reportedly no longer showing the option, suggesting the integration is being phased out ahead of the official deadline.

Existing users who want to continue backing up photos to Microsoft’s cloud platform will need to install the standalone OneDrive app from the Google Play Store.

After signing into a Microsoft account, users can open their account profile, select Camera Backup and grant the app permission to access photos and videos.

The process will continue uploading new media to OneDrive, but it will no longer offer the same two-way integration or allow cloud images to appear directly inside Samsung Gallery.

The shutdown will also affect features that rely on Gallery syncing, including access to OneDrive-backed photos through compatible Samsung TVs and smart appliances.

Galaxy owners can alternatively move to services including Google Photos, Dropbox or Amazon Photos, while privacy-conscious users may consider encrypted or self-hosted platforms such as Proton Drive and Immich.

The change comes as Samsung and Microsoft unwind one of the closest integrations between Galaxy smartphones and Microsoft’s Windows and cloud ecosystems.
