Home > Appliances > Samsung Expands SmartThings Lineup

Connected home is everywhere with local retailers looking to expand into the area amid reports that Samsung has expanded its SmartThings lineup with a new camera, smart plug and smart bulb. Local availability yet to be confirmed.

The SmartThings platform allows consumers to connect several compatible smart third-party and Samsung devices — such as smart plugs, speakers, cameras, lights — to a central SmartThings Hub.

Samsung’s new branded SmartThings devices reveal Samsung’s plans to generate a complete ecosystem of their own to rival LG and others.

The SmartThings Cam is an indoor full HD and HDR camera with 145-degree views, night vision, and two-way audio.

It can differentiate between various objects, pets, and people, and enables users to customise which motion will be sent as a push notification in the SmartThings app.

The new SmartThings WiFi Smart Plug works as a standard smart plug to turn on lamps, small appliances etc. on a schedule or via voice-command — compatible with Bixby, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Both the Smart Plug and SmartThings Cam do not require the SmartThings Hub to operate.

Samsung’s new SmartThings Bulb is also compatible with those virtual assistants via the SmartThings App.

All three new devices are available via the Samsung website and select retailers in the US. Local availability yet to be confirmed.

In December of last year, Samsung Australia launched the SmartThings platform here beginning in Victoria.
