Samsung Defends Against Fake AI Photo Camera Concerns
Samsung is defending itself against the notion that its phone cameras are producing fake AI photos of the Moon, with Samsung EVP Patrick Chomet stating that there is no such thing as a real picture.
While controversial to photographers, the statement begs the question of what a real picture is, as companies such as Apple, Google, and Samsung combine multiple frames across multiple cameras to produce their final smartphone images.
And with the rise of Samsung’s AI Super Resolution technology in its new Galaxy S24 and S24 Ultra, which offer Space Zoom, augmenting 3x and 10x telephoto cameras with digital zoom, the debate may come to a head.
Chomet believes however that the industry needs to be regulated, that governments are right to be concerned, and that Samsung intends to help.
“Samsung’s strategy is to give consumers a way to capture ‘the moment,’ and a way to create ‘a new reality.’ Both use AI, he says — but the latter get watermarks and metadata “to ensure people understand the difference,” he said.
